Consciousness is one continuum. It has intelligence, energy and awareness. Observing the moving images on a cinema screen is an optical illusion. Observing the grids of pixels varying in intensity, on a TV screen not as such but as moving objects is another example. Consciousness has two capabilities - creating a set/pattern of vibrations (in the quantum plane, if you wish to say so) and observing the same through a lower quantum plane capability. In the process it creates an experience, very different from the original quantum vibrations. The best example is the dream state. How can there be experiences akin to the wakeful state, in a small nerve end in the place you call brain? The dream is a mini-version of the capabilities of consciousness. You may say, the dream breaks and there is memory of it in the wakeful state and not vice versa. consciousness creates limited memory of the wakeful state in the dream, in order to ensure that there is the belief that the wakeful state is real, that the body is real and that the world outside is also real. Sage Vasistha calls it 'Deergha Kaala Swapna' Again the projection is such that the experience is through a window - you may call it your body. In fact, the body, feelings, thoughts, sensory perceptions and discrete objects perceived is one integral experience. Thought deceives, by using words like 'this is me' and 'this is outside me'. Nothing moves in consciusness. Finite experience occurs at points in time and space. The feeling/experience of an individual moving from place 'x' to place 'y' is a myriad adjacent points in space, flashing the finite experience, in a sequential manner, on after the other. Thus the reality does not consist of one world and millions of bodies - it consists of millions of consciousness points, appearing and disappearing in time and space, each of which experiences a world. Consciousness has infinite capabilities, at each point all its powers exist and hence its powers are not localised. The story of the worlds is designed once and plays on and on, effortlessly. Finite consciousness is but a 'point' shadow of the Infinite Consciousness. How else can you explain the contradictions - bacteria being invisible, viruses being invisible, atoms being invisible, but a pattern of atoms appearing as steady matter. At the quantum level it is further complicated. If one recognizes that finite consciousness is also not a permanent entity, but a point projection in infinite consciousness, at a given time and space and following the binary patterns (0,1 - off, on) we will understand that there is nothing like an entity. Just as the dream world is shattered, constant reminder of this structure will one day shatter the myth of the world as reality and Consciouness shall remain in all its Glory.

Having done a little bit of research, it appears that for the last several thousand years the only viable method to activate the state of Prajna and/or realize the various stages of Turiya is to dissolve the ego by engaging in various forms of meditational practices (e.g. mindfulness, mantra, asanas, etc). And while this may have been okay at a time when distractions and every day demands were at an all time low, times have since changed, distractions have increased exponentially, and it is now near impossible to expect ordinary, every day individuals--especially those caught in the capitalist/western mentality (about 90% of the worlds population)--to just drop everything and start engaging in meditational practice.

However, more recently a few technologies have been developing that may offer an alternative approach. For example, the Institute of HeartMath have developed a technology they call the emWave PC, which, if you read their research and descriptions is a technology designed to facilitate the process of activating ones' heart connection and thereby reducing egoic identification. There is also another technology that has been recently developed called Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), which is a noninvasive method to excite neurons in the brain by inducing weak electric currents in the brain tissue via powerful magnetic fields. This allows you to activate and/or de-activate various regions of the brain. An example of how this might be applied in a meditational context is that it can be used to deactivate the language center of the brain, thereby facilitating the meditational process by making it easier for an individual to remain in a state of "stillness" or "thoughtlessness".

So for those of you out there who are interested in meditation but don't have the luxury of meditating in a Himalayan cave for the next 20 years, perhaps these kinds of technologies may be just the thing you need.

Turiya or the (fourth) state of consciousness as mentioned in the Mandukya Upanishad is defined as that which is beyond any manifestation, unpercievable and uninferable. It the the third manifestation of consciousness called Prajna that refers to the collective or non-local, (non subjective, non-objective) consciousness of that which comes into manifestation.
Turiya is that source of inspiration at times called samadhi or intuitive insight. The cultivation of the Non-ordinary state i.e. a state of consciousness that is beyond the ego, is a method of leading one to the expereince of the Turiya (creative insight) state of awareness. Turiya being akin to the wave form of possibility instead of the particle of manifest actuality is only recognized as it manifests in non-subjective, non-objective consciousness.

About the quantum self / non-ordinary state. Is this the same state referred to as the turiya state of consciousness that is described in ancient east Indian spiritual texts like the Siva Sutras?
